A urine sample can give multiple clues as to how the kidneys and bladder are functioning, and if disease may be present. The concentration of the urine can indicate if the kidneys are doing their job and conserving water or not. It can also support suspicion of other diseases like diabetes or Cushing’s.

The urine can also be examined for presence of sugar, protein, red and white blood cells, as well as the pH of the urine. If sediment is present, it can be examined for cells or crystals that may be causing or result of urinary tract irritation.

A sample can be caught at home (then refrigerated if unable to bring right away) for exam, or a free catch sample can be caught during the exam. If your pet is having specific urinary issues, always remember to not let them urinate for at least a couple hours before the exam.
